How to Tune a Guitar
Pitch pipes, electronic tuners and tuning forks can all help you to tune your guitar.
Tuning with an Electronic Tuner
1. If tuning an electric guitar plug the guitar into the tuner and turn it on. If you are tuning an acoustic guitar you will need to hold the speaker of the tuner next to the sound hole as you play the strings.
2. Play the first string and watch the needle move around. The string is in tune when the needle hits the middle of the screen.
3. Turn the tuning peg as you play the string, until the string is in tune.
4. You can now use this first string as a reference for tuning the rest of the guitar by ear as seen below, or the electronic tuner can be used for all strings.
5. Outside noises can be picked up by the tuner and make it less accurate, so tuning should be done in a quiet space.
Tuning by Ear
If you are tuning by ear you will need a reference pitch to match the sound to. This can be provided by a tuning fork, pitch pipe or another instrument that is already in tune.
1. Begin by tuning the sixth (lowest) string to E. Play the E note on the reference instrument and match the sound of the sixth string by turning the tuning peg.
2. Play the note on the fifth fret of the sixth string that you just tuned. This will give you the pitch of the fifth string. This string will be tuned to A.
3. Repeat for the fourth string.
4. When you come to tune the third string, play the fourth fret on the fourth string as a reference note.
5. To tune the second and first strings the fifth fret of the previous string is used as a reference.
